It is seemingly a tobacco company that is either owned or endorsed by the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and it would advertise its special brand of cigarettes at the kingdom's racing events via track-side banners.

Trivia[]

  • Marioro's name and logo design is a parody of Marlboro cigarettes which was itself a major advertiser for the Formula 1 racing series at the time of the game's release.
  • Outside of Japan, Marioro was censored to avoid featuring references to cigarettes in an E-rated game and all instances of Marioro in the game were replaced with "Mario Star" which no longer resembled the Marlboro logo. Whether Mario Star is still considered a cigarette brand or if its referencing Mario's Star power-up is never elaborated on.
    • The later game Mario Party would once again feature a "Mario Star" billboard in the Slot-Car Derby minigame.
  • Although Nintendo has not acknowledged Marioro since Mario Kart 64, various online shops such as Redbubble have sold their own unlicensed "Marioro" merchandise, mostly clothing items with the Marioro logo.
